Just like math there is more then one way to make this type of quilt. My first step is to rough cut the sleeves and collars off. If you want something from the sleeve then it will have to be removed from the shirt and the cuff removed. By rough cutting the shirts this removes all the parts that are not usable for the quilt.
Again, there are many ways to do this step. Here is what I do, I use a two sided adhesive on the back of the portion of the shirt that I intend to use for the quilt. At this point I do not fuse this to the backs of the shirts. When I have completed all of my shirt backs. I then decide the size and shape of the blocks to go on the quilt. Once that has been decided, I begin cutting all of them to the desired size. I do not cut all of my shirts the same size. I like to incorporate different sizes. I think this creates more interest in the quilt.
I prepare the top of the quilt next. I purchase fabric in one large piece so that it can be ironed and laid on my large table.
This is where the fun begins. I begin laying the blocks out. When I think I have everything placed, I check again for the following: same colored shirts are not together, same event shirts are not together, the colors are balanced and evenly spread throughout the top. I allow it to sit for a few days and continue to look at it.
When I am happy with where everything is located, I stay fusing the shirts to the top background. Once this step is complete I take the top to the sewing machine and use a fancy stitch to attach the blocks to the top.
The next step is to press the back. Since I have a long arm, I trim the top and bottom of the back and the bottom of the quilt top. Batting also has to be measured and cut.
I’m shortening the rest because not everyone has a long arm. I load the back then the top and batting. I choose to free motion in a stipple or meandering pattern. I like the look of the quilt and I think ty he washing and wearing of the quilt is better this way.
When I have finished the quilting, I trim all sides then sew on binding.
